Elian Go Home Already

I wish to goodness that Elian kid would just go away. I'm one of those Americans who watch the news in hopes of seeing a wreck or a good riot. I do not watch it to see six year old kids. This whole Elian thing makes me sick as a dog drinking antifreeze.

What is the deal with all this anyway? The deal is television ratings. Nothing more and nothing less. In times when there are no airplane crashes or AmTrack wrecks, the news media goes prowling around looking for a story. I see this as little different than a dog prowling the neighborhood for garbage.

So they find this little Cuban kid and make some sort of bizarre social icon out of him. Good grief, we're going to start up the cold war again over some six year old kid.

There are some points I want to make here. I wrote about this in an earlier article. I know I carry on with nonsense most of the time but here is a real point. That Elian kid is a fraud and nothing more. I have no idea whether he was thought up by some media executive, or the kid's family. remember when all this first started, when he was taken from Florida on his third day in America to Washington to meet all the important people? How many illegal aliens float into Florida every day? How many of those get to go to Washington and to see Mickey Mouse?

The next bit of evidence is the news footage. When they "found" the kid, he was said to have been adrift for three days on an innertube, wearing only pants. I just happened to have taped the news that night. Something struck me as odd about that statement. Off to the office, to check the weather for the previous three days in the area between Cuba and Florida. Sunny and warm, with no rain or clouds. Adrift for three days in the ocean? I think not, where was the sunburn?

Anybody besides me ever see the movie "Meet John Doe"? It was made in 1941 and had Gary Cooper as the star. It dealt with national manipulation by the national news media. The similarities are very concerning for me.

Trips to Washington, crowds gathering with candles? This whole thing seems a bit too organized to me.

Let's say for a minute it was true and he is an illegal alien. Guess what? He's an illegal alien! He nor his mom and dad applied for a visa. He came to America on a innertube! He is not entitled to anything here. To treat him like this is a slap in the face to all the Cubans who have applied for visas and have waited up to three years only to be turned down. It's a slap in the face to all the people the Coast Guard have turned back to Cuba and poverty.

Are we supposed to give this kid the key to America because he made it? I think not! If this kids name was Miguel Ortiz from Mexico, he would have been tossed back across the fence like yesterday's garbage.

I am grateful to live in this country. It is easy for me to see why everyone wants to come here. We complain about taxes and government waste. But actually, our taxes are lower than most, and believe it or not our government isn't as corrupt as most in the world. But, I feel I have to make this statement. I think it is totally shameful how the Federal Government is handling all of this. They are being held hostage by a six year old kid. They are talking about asylum and what he faces when he goes home to Cuba. Well, let's have a look at what he has had in America.

He has been flown everywhere to be put on display. TV crews have spent two days living with him. His uncle hauls him out and carries him up and down the street anytime a good mob forms or the TV cameras are turned on.

As far as asylum goes, he does not qualify. To be granted asylum, one has to prove that the individual would face political reprisal should they return to their native land. Cuba would hail this kid like a hero upon his return.

If the government had taken control of this situation in the manner at which they hound old ladies behind in their dead husbands taxes, nobody would have cared if the kid went back.

How many American kids in Miami will go to bed hungry tonight? How many kids in America would like to see Mickey Mouse? Do they not rate the same treatment as this illegal alien? What does the father who has been laid off by one of the hundreds of plant closures, not covered by the Elian led news media, tell his kid when they want to go to Disneyland this year? "Son you'll just have to go float around in the ocean until the government sends you to Disneyworld."

All the lawyers involved, the salary of Janet Reno, the salaries of all the elected officials add all this money up. How many hungry American kids could have been fed on the money spent to debate this six year old illegal alien?

This kid has the advantage of having two families who want him. This kid is wanted by two families yet our government sees fit to spend millions debating his future. Yet there are kids in America, in our own county that nobody wants and our government cuts funding to organizations that help them. They tell our own kids that they don't have the money in the budget to help them, yet pay for this kid's trips and lawyer's fees.

In the end the kid will be shipped to Cuba. There will be a riot in Miami. People will be hurt and stores damaged. A year from now the news media will be milking another cash cow. A year from now a Miami policeman's widow will be remembering the day her husband was killed by a rioting mob. The storeowner will be trying to pay off the debt of repairing his store. Will anyone remember what all this was about?

Now, if you've read this far you are entitled to read the best part.

That mayor in Miami should be glad I don't run the Federal Government. If I did I'd squash him like a grape. Get on TV and say he won't allow his police to protect the immigration officials should they come for the kid. What kind of moron have they elected in Florida?

That's a threat and I'd call him on it. He's find himself audited and hounded by the Federal Authorities at every turn. All he was doing was campaigning for votes in a city that is mainly Cuban. He's basically saying vote for me and I won't do anything. As much as I despise what he did, I will have to say that's one of the most honest statements I have ever heard a politician say.
